Pet Insurance

I wanted to do a blog on Pet insurance' Being in the animal industry for 25 years I can say that I have seen so many owners that have at one time or another have been out in a position of an un-expected vet bill that is costly weather it was an un-expected accident like a fall or an onset of an illness or just their fur companion aging.
I see far to often the question of should i get pet insurance or should I just put money into a bank account for any un-expected vet costs.
Im going to touch base on all. the key points to help owners choose the right health care planning for their fur babies.
First and foremost if you have a large amount of income where you could spend thousands of dollars of vet cost and it wouldn't interrupt your family unit then you are best to put a large amount of money into a pet bank account
If you are someone like myself I have access to larges amounts of credit in the event of emergency's but paying those loans off would certainly take away from my family financial dynamics then PET INSURANCE IS A MUST .
For those that create a bank account for their fur-baby for vet costs that can arise ' I love that one is planning for the medical care that their pets need but the biggest issue with this is that most dont have enough saved for those costly vet fees. For an example lets say you get a 3 mnth old lab puppy and and lets say that curious puppy eats a part of a rug at 5 mnths old and needs to have emergency surgery to remove the foreign body between your initial vet appointment that would include exam , series of x-rays, possible some efforts to induce vomiting , and if required surgery to remove the foreign body can be aprox $800-$5000
And lets say that same lab puppy 5 mnths later at 12 mnths old was playing at the park and accidentally tore their knee ligament and required surgery to repair between diagnostic and surgery vet cost can be aprox $10,000 and up' plus rehabilitation cost such as massage therapy or hydrotherapy.
So as you can see the cost in diagnostics , surgeries , rehabilitation , medication can all add up on top of your routine vet care. Its also important to note that while some pets do very well over their life time with needing minimal vet care others can have multiple treatments needed or maybe just one major medical event.
In any case you want to ensure that as a pet owner that you are pre-paired to manage those vet costs that are expected and un-expected.
Now here are a few key points to keep in mind when choosing a good pet insurance.
No pet insurance covers anything pre-existing
This means if your pet has been diagnosed with a heart murmur or hip dysplasia or diarrhoea insurance will exclude any health related issues that may arise as the pet was diagnosed with an issue PRIOR to getting pet insurance so its important that you get pet insurance as soon as you get your puppy so that your plan dosent exclude anything from your policy
Read the fine print of your insurance policy when singing up
All insurance companies will. have different coverages and coverage certain things while not having coverage on other things for an example one company may cover dental cleanings while another insurance company wont. Also read the terms and conditions most companies want your pet to have annual wellness checks.
Research the pet insurance companies you are considering
read reviews , considers what others say about their annual price increases , and filing claims etc
Below Im going to look at 2 Common pet insurances companies - their others but these are the most commonly used and my personal thoughts pro and cons of each
Please keep in mind there is no ONE insurance fits all.- there are several factors that will make the perfect insurance perfect for you and your pooch.

There are several other pet insurances you can look at as you can see that each company will have different pricing and what they cover so my advice is to look into a few companies and weigh out the pros and cons to each and most offer free online estimates by paying with the coverage details. Please keep in mind that some insurances only offer max yearly claims up to $3000-$5000 this will definitely offer some financial relief for those un-planned vet cost but often diagnostics or a couple small things in a year can eat though that amount quickly so I personally recommend a plan with a minimal yearly coverage of $10,000 with 80-90 percent coverage.
I have 3 bulldogs that are covered with pet plus us and I absolutely love them our oldest plan is coming up on 5 years and we havent had any issues with any claims and we have had everything from overnight IV emergency stays, Allergy shots, Ear infections , Appoiuntments and treatments with cardiologist ,echocardiograms, medications , x-rays, surgeries and amount to have double knee surgery and rehabilition all covered . They to direct payment into my bank from 1-3 weeks for claims under $1000 and if your vet allows they do direct payments to your vet for any claims over $1000. They are very affordable and have some flexibility in their plans and offer discounts to help ease those payments this is great when you have muti pets insured . Im bummed they offer very limited dental as this is such an important part of our pets overall health but this also allows for much better pricing . Im great at keeping our canines teeth up to par so this was not a deal breaker for me but if you are someone looking for those dental cleanings to be covered and more exclusive dental coverage then you will want to look into other insurance companies,Pet plus us has paid thousands of dollars for my canines health over the last 5 years and Im so happy that I choose to get pet insurance so I have never had to delay any medical treatment
Please note that Although Pet plus Us is my personal favourite this does not mean there is not other great plans out there this will all depend on what type of coverage you are wanting and what those details look like for your own personal pooch and budget.
Paws up if your pup is covered weather that. be though a pet insurance or well planned pet savings account if your planning for those un-expected vet costs you and your fur-baby will be able to get though any medical situations with ease
Lastly its never to late to get pet insurance as mentioned above no pet insurance will cover anything pre-existing but there are many medical issues that can arise that may not be present in your pets medical history.
I write this blog with the appreciation of a recent unexpected vet surgery for one of my own and having a pet insurance in place I was able to set in motion the extensive vet care she needs with out the stresses of affordability. I also want to shed light that many of our pets end up being surrendered to shelters due to the medical attention that was needed and could not be financially achieved due to lack of medical care planning and some of these babies receive care and are adopted back out and others are euthanized due to cost in care
so lets come together and shed more light to the importance of planning for our fur babies medical care
