I have Worked With Animals all my life as a vet assistant and groomer and well I have had my share of fur-babies over the years.
The number one question I get as professional groomer is how can i remove my dogs tear stains?
Well lets start by understanding Tear staining.. Tear staining results from excessive tear production witch is known as "Epiphora" this can leave a residue that settles into the fur around the eyes and often appears a rusty colour.
The Rusty colour is typically caused by porphyrin, witch means a waste by-product that essentially comes from the brake-down of red blood cells.
There are some breeds more prone to this type of staining due to their facial structure. Brachycephalic (Flat faced) dogs have a more squished or narrow tear ducts.
there are other reasons for the tearing such as allergies, shallow eye sockets, blocked tear drainage holes.
No matter the reason or breed doing the following will often completely eliminate Staining!
First have your groomer trim the stained hair from around the eyes' giving them a fresh clean canvas.
keep the eye hair trimmed regularly, to keep the eyes from being irritated.
Use Filtered water in a stainless water bowl - clean bowls daily.
Keep the eyes clean and dry 'wiping daily with pet safe eye tears or a warm wet cloth.
diet - Keep to higher end brands you do get what you pay for when it comes to dog food
